Alex McAvoy joins the School of Data Science and Society after completing his postdoc in the Center for Mathematical Biology at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. McAvoy is an applied mathematician working in evolutionary dynamics, game theory, multi-agent learning, and networks. His research looks at how behaviors spread in populations, with a focus on developing tools for studying heterogeneous social networks. Of particular interest are the pathologies that arise in network dynamics, such as when prosocial behaviors emerge that heighten inequality. On the learning side, he is interested in the role of selfishness in populations, as well as how both individuals and groups navigate conflicts of interest.
