Thomas Hofweber is a professor in the department of philosophy in the College of Arts and Sciences and has a secondary appointment in the School of Data Science and Society. He received his PhD in philosophy from Stanford University, where he was a member of the Center for the Study of Language and Information (CSLI). He taught at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, before joining Carolina, where he regularly teaches a class entitled “AI and the Future of Humanity” and is the director of The AI Project. His research focuses on metaphysics, the philosophy of language and the foundations of artificial intelligence. In the latter area he is particularly interested in questions tied to rationality, representation, alignment, agency and interpreting machine learning models.
