Shahar Kovalsky is an assistant professor in the department of mathematics in the College of Arts and Sciences and has a secondary appointment in the School of Data Science and Society as well as an adjunct appointment in the department of computer science in the College of Arts and Sciences. He earned his Ph.D. in computer science and applied mathematics from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. He holds a B.Sc. in mathematics, as well as a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in electrical engineering, from Ben-Gurion University in Israel. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Duke University, he joined the mathematics faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill in 2020. His research focuses on optimization, geometry, computer graphics and vision, machine learning and its applications in biology and medicine. In his free time, he enjoys keeping his kids happy and trying to raise them to be as sarcastic as he is.
